Jad Abumrad from WNYC’s RadioLab Copic Portrait Demo

Now people… this demo is looooong… like over an hour… so go make a sandwich while it loads.

AND I barely talk through half of  it, so feel free to make with the slider and double-time through a bunch of it…

Enjoy! And feel free to ask me any questions about the techniques~

Copics on Fluid WC Paper

Fluid Watercolour Paper 140 CP

This paper is in 2-side glued block format. Nice tooth. It’s not a full cotton rag so isn’t as durable as the best quality papers like Arches. Be careful when scrubbing. But for the price ($11-ish for 9 x 12), it’s a pretty good option.

Paris Bleedproof

Paris Bleedproof

This pad is available in 9 x 12 or 11 x 14, glued at the top. It’s thinner than w/c paper and less suitable for wet media.

Canson Comic/Illustration Board

Canson Comic/Illustration Board

I used this stuff for the whole time I was using watercolour for the comic. It’s a nice hard board – took a lot of water, not good at ALL for scrubbing out.

Arches 140lb. Hot Press Paper

Copics-Arches140HP

Arches 140lb Hot Press

This is one of my favourite surfaces. 100% cotton rag so it’s durable for scrubbing out. The hot press surface means that you can’t control the paint runs and back washes – which I love.

Manga Marker Pad

Manga Marker Pad

This pad is very similar to the Paris Bleedproof – so similar in fact as to warrant zero comment.

Copics on Yupo Paper

Here’s my Yupo paper test. It’s pretty cool.

And here’s the final scanned so you can have a closer look.

Yupo paper

The Yupo was pretty fun.

Copic Refill Inks

I had to stop in the middle of my portrait demo and refill my Copics, so I thought ‘heck, I’ll just film this too…’
I didn’t know the booster was so darn sharp.

Copics on Black Ink Test

I tested a bunch of different felt tip markers to see which ones would bleed when I used Copics over top. The ink had only been dry for maximum 20 minutes or so. The results actually surprised me.
