4639772572_7396e02019My Dear Artists & Writers & Creative Types,

This post is kind of a big deal to me because it’s the foundation of why I do what I do with my business.

It’s about you and your art.

And what that can mean in the world, to the world and for the world. Nothing is made in a vacuum. We are all connected. Artists will continue to steal fire.

What?

Joseph Campbell is my Favourite

“In my writing and my thinking and my work, I’ve thought of myself as addressing artists and poets and writers. The rest of the world can take it or leave it as far as I’m concerned.”

– from Joseph Campbell’s final lecture, at the Skowhegon School of Painting and Sculpture, in Maine.

God, I do so love this man.

If there was ever anyone on this Earth that spoke so clearly of spiritual truths that resonate with me on a core level, without artiface or smarmy guru crap, it’s Joseph Campbell.

He’s never failed my two filters of truth: Is it Loving? Is it Inclusive?

And he spoke so clearly of the function of art and artists:

Bill Moyers:
“Who interprets the divinity inherent in nature for us today?
Who are our shamans? Who interprets unseen things for us?”

Joseph Campbell:
“It is the function of the artist to do this.
The artist is the one who communicates myth for today.”

– from The Power of Myth with Bill Moyers.

“The role of the artist I now understood as that of revealing through the world-surfaces the implicit forms of the soul, and the great agent to assist the artist was the myth.

It is by going down into the abyss that we recover the
treasures of life.

Myths are the world’s dreams. They are archetypal dreams and deal with great human problems.
Myths and dreams come from the same place.

They come from realizations of some kind that then have to find expression in symbolic form.

A real artist is the one who has learned to recognize and to render… the ‘radiance’ of all things as an epiphany or showing forth of the truth.”

– Joseph Campbell, “The Hero’s Journey”

Remember my being Haunted by the Holes?

Screen Shot 2014-03-26 at 9.52.36 AMBack when I spoke about Salinger and Michael Cho, I briefly touched on this idea of feeling a significant loss when an artist’s vision or message is aborted before it reaches maturity. This is why:

I am fully on board with Joseph’s perspective on art and artists.

I’ve been inspired and motivated to be a better version of myself, reach higher and stretch further because of the creative efforts others.

Artists, writers, actors, musicians, directors… have all impacted my experience of this life as one immersed within a divine field of significance and connection. The creatives in my life have affected the very foundation of what I believe this world to be.

This is not insignificant.

This is the result of art. This is what you do.

This is why your art is so FUCKING IMPORTANT.

Without your art, we don’t evolve. We aren’t pointed to the next level, we aren’t stretched. We don’t reach.

Be Brave. We Need You.

We need your art to evolve as a species. We need your perspective to be reminded of why we’re really here.

Be brave in the face of dissension; we need your unique vision.OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Be brave when you’re misunderstood; we need you to show us the way.

Be brave when you are ignored; we need you to persevere until the rest of us catch on.

Be brave enough to stand up and speak out and be seen. Be brave enough to lead.

Be brave enough to share your art with the world.

We need you.

With Love & Gratitude,

~Lezley
